While any unsafe bridge is one too many, our bridges are still somewhat safer than other areas of the country. These numbers include bridges that are both functionally obsolete and structurally deficient.
A functionally obsolete bridge has older design features....and while it's not unsafe for all vehicles, it cannot safely accomodate the high traffic volumes, vehicle sizes and weights. They were simply built for less volume.
A structurally deficient bridge is closed or restricted to light vehicles because of its deteriorated structural components. While not necessarily unsafe, these bridges must have limits for speed and weight.
It would be worth your while to investigate bridges in your area to see which ones are unsafe. In looking for information, I found that a high number of CSX Railroad bridges were on the list.
